Porsche 935/76 - Rolf Stommelen / Manfred Schurti

The road-going 930 and its racing derivatives traced their roots to the experimental RSR-based Turbos that were widely used in the three-litre prototype class in previous years. Given the 1.4 Turbo equivalence factor, it uses a 2.1-liter six-cylinder engine, which will be increased to three liters for the road car. The 934 Group 4 was very similar to the street 911 Turbo and was only raced by privateers, but it was still very successful in its class. Group 5 homologation allowed many more modifications with displacement-based minimum weight as the most important rule.

To fit into the "less than 4 litres" and "970 kg" group, the 935's engine had to displace no more than 2857 cc. By using a slightly smaller 92mm bore, a displacement of just over 2.8 liters was created. A very large KKK turbocharger was hung behind the engine, coupled to an intercooler. In this specification, the turbocharged engine developed a power of 590 to 630 hp depending on the settings. The four-speed gearbox was similar to that of the Turbo road car and it was a sturdier gearbox than that which had proven to be the RSR Turbo's weak point.
